Worship

Worship

Worship is simply defined as reverance, honor, glory, and praise that we give to our Creator.  Jesus, while being tempted by Satan, declared that our worship must be directed toward God.  As our Creator, only He is worthy to be worshipped (Luke 4:5-8).  Therefore, He has the right to dictate the terms upon which we worship Him and we should want to worship Him in the way that pleases Him.  Jesus defined what pleases God, and what is demanded of man, regarding worship.  He said that our worship must be "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).  The phrase, "in spirit," refers to the proper attitude & motives in our worship.  In other words, one's heart & mind must be humble, sincere, and engaged as we worship from a genuine heart of love & devotion.  "In truth" would refer to worshipping God in the acceptable manner in which God has prescribed.  There is worship that God does not accept.  Vain worship angers God because God's commands in worship are laid aside as people worship according to their own will, instead of God's (Matthew 15:7-9).  Ignorant worship also displeases God because people are unaware of the object, attitude, and manner of the worship which God has commanded (Acts 17:22-25).  However, in searching the scriptures, all of God's disciples can know how to properly worship Him "in spirit and in truth."

God wants His disciples (Christians) to assemble together for worship regularly (Hebrews 10:25).  This was commanded upon the first day of every week (Acts 20:7).  Also, the Bible describes five acts of worship that God has designated as the acceptable means of worshipping Him on that day:

1.  Singing (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16)
2.  Praying (Acts 2:42; 12:5)
3.  Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-34)
4.  Giving (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-9)
5.  Preaching (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2)
